Hampton: Civil War II Comments

The Beavers can pull off an unusual feat on Saturday.

They can complete a Civil War sweep. It hasn’t happened for OSU since the 1992-93 season and those two wins came in the middle of a four-game OSU win streak.

It’s been bone-dry since. The Beavers have won eight games in the series since that season.

“(The chance to sweep) is one of those benchmarks that you sure would like to hurdle for guys’ sake, for the team’s sake, for the fans and for the school’s sake,” OSU coach Craig Robinson said. “I think I’m going to have ample opportunity to do things that haven’t been done before, but it sure is nice to be going into a game when you have an opportunity to have a sweep because it means you won the first game. Subsequently, it’s tough to have won your first game and come back and have to win the second game because you know it’s going to be much harder, no matter how hard it was the first game.”

Calvin Haynes expects the second go-round to be a tough test for the Beavers.

“We expect their best effort just like we expected to get the best out of them last game. I just felt we played harder than them last game, just enough to come out with the win,” he said.

“We definitely expect them to come out with a lot of energy, a lot of fire and a lot of fight and coming with their best efforts on defense and trying to stop some of our best players on offense.”

Haynes said the Beavers will have to match the intensity they brought to Mac Court to take the win in Eugene.

“Just take everything we did in that game. It wasn’t an offensive juggernaut but defensively we didn’t let them get comfortable with anything they liked to do. We stopped their best players, (Michael) Dunigan and (Tajuan) Porter. We made them frustrated. That’s the main object of the game is whoever makes the most stops wins and to our advantage, we did that.”
