Hampton: OSU looking for a fast start Comments

Part of the reason OSU men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson went with a new starting lineup for the Cal game was to get the Beavers off to a fast start.

He knows that the Beavers play much better if they get on a roll from the opening tip. Slow starts just feed their insecurities.

“We have an inferiority complex,” Robinson said. “Because of our history here we’re used to playing from behind and it feels like it’s become a habit with this team so what I’m trying to do is reverse that and get us going early on and what I’ve found is when we get going early on, there’s an excitement with the entire team and there’s also the pressure on the other team right from the beginning so the shots aren’t as easy and they’re not as casual, they’re not as confident.

“So we’re trying to excite ourselves as well as put pressure on the other team. I don’t know any team that doesn’t want to get off to a good start, but for a team like ours that’s used to getting off to bad starts, it’s really important to emphasize the start of the game.”
