Hampton: OSU wins/Robinson, DePaul rumor Comments
The Beavers built on the Civil War win with another rare victory, taking a 67-64 win over Arizona on Lathen Wallace’s 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left.
OSU coach Craig Robins said it was a step forward for the team.
“This time last year we didn’t know how to finish a game like this in the league against a team that has a great tradition and who has had our number for a few years here,” Robinson said. “I thought at the beginning of the year this would all come together a little bit earlier. And I’m not ready to say were coming together yet. We’re still a work in process. We haven’t had a weekend where we’ve had some success. Now, we’ll see on Saturday if this ends up being back to the way we know we can play or it’s just we made the shot at the end of the game.”
It looks as if the Roeland Schaftenaar of last year has come to play. Schaftenaar struggled for much of this season. He was slowed by an ankle injury and had difficulty dealing with high expectations.
He took over the game for the Beavers on Thursday, scoring 22 points, 15 coming in the second half, and blocking two UA shots in the final minute.
“This is the Roeland that we expected 15 games ago,” Robinson said. “I couldn’t be happier for that kid. Roeland is a hard guy to be hard on, because he does everything right, he come in and works, he’s one of the nicest guys on the team, one of our brightest kids, one of the best students. And for him to be struggling like he did was tough for him, and I’m really happy he had the game he had today.”
Robinson going to DePaul?
There has been speculation that Robinson is among the candidates for the open coaching spot at DePaul, which is in Chicago, a city Robinson is very familiar with.
Robinson was asked if he would be interested in the job.
“I have no comment on that,” he said. “I’d rather talk about my team and Oregon State.”
Robinson said he has been fortunate to have gotten the amount of publicity he has since taking the OSU job.
“Partially because of my family and partially because of how well those guys in the locker room are playing,” he said. “It’s going to happen when people are going to mention my name. Nobody’s contacted me.”
