Hampton: Pac-10 play begins Comments

The Beavers are on the road for their first weekend of the Pacific-10 Conference season, heading to Washington for a New Year’s Eve game before moving to the Palouse to play at WSU on Saturday.

Wins against UW have been few and far between for the Beavers. The last was 73-65 at Gill Coliseum in 2006-07. It was the second win for OSU since 2003.

It won’t be any easier this year, but the Beavers are coming off what was probably their best game of the preseason in a win over Fresno State.

“From start to finish we looked like the team that finished the season last year as opposed to the team that started this year,” OSU coach Craig Robinson said. “With these guys it takes some time to get rolling because psychologically, based on what their history is, it’s tough to develop the mindset that they can win each time out.”

The tough part for OSU might be overcoming the Huskies  on the road without the home crowd support.

“Obviously, I think we’ll be ready,” OSU coach Craig Robinson said. “It is a tough place to start your season. It’s a situation where if we do what we’re supposed to do, we should have an opportunity to be in the game. I thought we played them very well up there last year for a half, maybe three-quarters of the game. When you want to beat a ranked team you have to play an entire game and even then you don’t even know if you’re going to win.”

Robinson might have to make a quick getaway and is making plans for such an occasion.

His wife, Kelly, is expecting a baby any time now, with the official due date on Jan. 14.  They don’t know if it’s a boy or girl.

Assistant coach Doug Stewart’s wife, Lindsay, is also pregnant and looking at a due date just a few days earlier than the Robinson’s.

Robinson was considering taking a rental car to Washington in case he needs to make a quick exit.
