Hampton: Beavers stop MVSU Comments

It wasn’t pretty or perfect, but the Oregon State men’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a solid 76-62 win over Mississippi Valley State.

It was rough going in the first half. The Beavers played tough defense but seemed tight on offense and managed a 28-26 lead at the half.

That wasn’t good enough for a team that was coming off a loss at Illinois-Chicago and coach Craig Robinson challenged the Beavers. They took the challenge and came out strong in the second half.

“Well, I want to win every game by a lot of points and hold the other team to not that many and we didn’t do either of those in the first half,” Robinson said. “At this point in the season we cannot have a half like we did in the first half. We need to start games like we did in the second half.”

They continued to play lockdown defense and the offense followed.

OSU hit 9 of 21 3-pointers, led by Calvin Haynes with four and Lathen Wallace with three.

“It’s just all about a rhythm and hitting the shots,” Wallace said. “The offense came to me and the offense came to Calvin and it was all about just making the shots.”

The Beavers take on Fresno State on Wednesday.
