Hampton: OSU’s inexplicable loss Comments
After watching Oregon State lose at home to Sacramento State, it’s hard to come up with the answers about this team.
Even coach Craig Robinson was at a loss about the Beavers.
Basketball-wise, it’s obvious why the Beavers lost to the Hornets. They didn’t play well in any phase of the game in the first half. The Hornets got on a roll from 3-point range and hit nine. They outrebounded the Beavers 22-16 and OSU could not respond from the field, making just 10 of 27 shots.
The Beavers nearly overcame the 22-point deficit, but fell short, 65-63.
There’s no way to sugar-coat it: This was a bad loss. Sac State is a much better team than last-year’s two-win squad, but they were the last-place team in the Big Sky. And it was at Gill Coliseum.
It looks like Robinson might need to sort out his rotation as soon as possible. And it might wind up looking a little different than everyone expected going into the season.
On Saturday, Roeland Schaftenaar and Omari Johnson spent most of the second half on the sidelines while players such as Joe Burton and Lathen Wallace got more playing time.
While Schaftenaar and Johnson are certainly still expected to be a big part of the team, Robinson is clearly open to playing anyone who shows they are ready.
“I think they feel horrible about it, which they should, but I think also they might learn from this,” Robinson said. “Because basically what you saw out there in the second half was a tryout because the first half guys didn’t work.”
