Hampton: Robinson speaks Comments

Craig Robinson met with the media on Tuesday in between OSU football coach Mike Riley’s press conference time and the Beavers football players.

The Beavers looked sharp in taking a 94-53 win over Southern Oregon in the first of two exhibition games.

OSU plays Western Oregon on Saturday at Gill Coliseum.

Robinson said the Beavers are running the offense much better than they did going into the season last year, but now he would like to see the Beavers continue to improve against the Wolves.

“We did a very good job with a lot of things Sunday night,” Robinson said. “What I want to see is a lot better cutting and execution. It’s understandable. We have three freshmen and a couple guys playing different positions. The execution wasn’t what we are comfortable with at the end of last year, but it was good.”

Three of the true freshmen got playing time against Southern Oregon. Angus Brandt, Jared Cunningham and Joe Burton all look like they will be able to contribute right away.

The addition of Cunningham is important for the Beavers with the graduation of point guard Rickey Claitt. Cunningham adds depth to the position, has shown great athleticism and seems to fit in well on both ends of the court.

“We lost Rickey, but we added three other guys that can play in the guard spot,” Robinson said. “The depth is the number one thing I noticed on Sunday. When I saw guys sort of easing back on defense when they were tired, I could immediately put a fresh body in there. Clearly we are going to miss his leadership. He had natural leadership ability, even though Rickey was the quiet type. He would call the right play with the game on the line.”
