Hampton: OSU men’s bb exhibition Comments
Got a look at the 2009-10 Oregon State men’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers rolled to a 94-53 win over Southern Oregon. It was a perfect time to get everyone on the court and OSU coach Craig Robinson did so, playing 14 players.
It was interesting to see what freshmen Angus Brandt, Jared Cunningham and Joe Burton could do.
It looks like Brandt and Cunningham have the best chance to get significant playing time right off the bat. Burton looks like he has great potential as a power forward-type and has slimmed down 20 pounds over the summer according to Robinson, but he is getting over the flu and Robinson said he would like to see him lose a little more weight and get into prime playing condition.
“It’s just the difference between being a college player and a high school player,” Robinson said. “What he was in high school was the kind of guy who could dominate a game, so he could take plays off until he was ready to play and he played the whole game. He’s down 20 pounds from this summer, so he worked hard this summer. I think he needs to be down another 15. He had the flu this past week, so his cardiovascular condition this week was thrown off by the flu. He’ll be in shape because he wants to play.”
Cunningham looks ready for the Pac-10. He has great leaping ability and could have the makings of a great point guard for the Beavers.
And when Roeland Schaftenaar graduates, Brandt should be able to step in at the point-center spot without missing a beat.
The big advantage the freshmen have is this year the Beavers have so many players that the pressure should not be too high.
Omari Johnson, Calvin Haynes and the Tarvers all look ready for the regular season. Daniel Deane came off the bench with a lot of spark and hit the boards hard.
THE BIGGER THEY ARE: Schaftenaar played 16 minutes and spent most of the game on the bench resting his ankle. No, he did not hurt it during introductions.
Schaftenaar jogged onto the court when he was introduced, tripped over a TV cord and tumbled to the court. He was just fine, though.
WAITING FOR THE NCAA: Freshman Roberto Nelson is still waiting for the NCAA to give him the go signal to join the team.
“The NCAA is working through the paperwork, they’re checking every single one of his courses he took and in the meantime we’re treating him like a student getting recruited,” Robinson said. “ He can’t hang with the team like he was on the team yet so we’re treating as a recruit who is in school part-time. I am optimistic that he’ll be cleared, I’m just hoping it’s in this quarter.”
