Hampton: OSU men’s basketball Comments

The Oregon State men’s basketball media day was held Wednesday morning and one of the big topics was the additional heftiness of forward/center Roeland Schaftenaar.

Apparently Schaftenaar hit the weights hard in the offseason and should be prepared to battle on the boards this season. He’s listed at 6-11, 260, up 20 pounds from last year.

Here’s what coach Craig Robinson had to say:

“I think that Roeland took some steps this summer that he hadn’t done before. Normally he spent more time at home than he did here. He’s a pretty good student and he’s always been ahead, so he really doesn’t need the summer school aspect of it. This summer he went home early and he came right back and got right to work with the rest of the guys, lifting, conditioning, getting a lot of shots up and really put himself in a position to be a much better player. With that comes the extra added weight that the people are noticing and it’s the good kind of weight, too. It’s muscle.”
