Pac-10 Power Poll Comments

Here’s my Pac-10 Power Poll:
1. CALIFORNIA (3-0, 0-0): The Golden Bears overcame a test at Minnesota. It helps when you’ve got the best running back in the country in Jahvid Best, but Cal’s got an experienced QB, some pretty good receivers and a solid D as well.
2. WASHINGTON (2-1, 1-0): A win over USC jumps the Huskies to No. 2 in the poll, but don’t expect this to last long. Maybe not past a trip to Stanford this weekend.
3. UCLA (3-0, 0-0): Hey, the Bruins beat Tennessee on the road and are coming off a 23-9 win over Kansas State. They have the week off before taking on the Cardinal on Oct. 3, so they’ll be hanging around for a little while.
4. USC (2-1, 0-1): The Trojans are not the juggernaut of just a couple of years ago, but they are the Trojans. Nevertheless, they’re going to keep slipping unless they get the quarterback situation sorted out, and fast.
5. OREGON STATE (2-1, 0-0): The Beavers are what we thought they would be. They’ve done what was expected with wins over Portland State and UNLV and a close loss to defending Big East champion Cincinnati. A big game with Arizona looms.
6. OREGON (2-1, 0-0): The Ducks have made some breaks for themselves the past two weeks. That’s what good teams do, but can they do it again this week against Cal?
7. STANFORD (2-1, 1-0): This is supposed the be the year the Cardinal make a run at the Pac-10s upper-division and a bowl game. So far, so good. A win over Washington would keep things on track.
8. ARIZONA STATE (2-0, 0-0): OK, the Sun Devils are 2-0, but they’ve played Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe. Next up: Georgia. If the record goes to 3-0, the Sun Devils will shoot right up in the poll.
9. ARIZONA (2-1, 0-0): OK, the Wildcats might not really be this bad, but somebody had to be ranked ninth. It’s still far better than No. 10.
10. WASHINGTON STATE (1-2, 0-0): Oh, the Cougars are coming off a win over SMU? That’s nice.
