Hampton: OSU’s win Comments
The Beavers got the job done against Portland State. It’s difficult to tell too much more than that.
With so many reserves playing in the second half, it’s tough to get a good read on this team, particularly on defense.
As expected, the Rodgers’ brothers were too much for the Vikings to handle. Canfield looked solid at QB, as did Ryan Katz, who got some good playing time under his belt.
The receivers are living up to their billing so far. The Beavers are deep and talented here. If anything, I think the presence of a star running back like Jacquizz Rodgers actually keeps the playcalling a little conservative. It works, of course, but I’d like to see even more use of the receivers as the season goes on.
Defensively, there’s going to be some growing pains. The line looks like it can be good, but it was hard to tell because PSU QB Drew Hubel gets his passes away so quickly.
Kevin Frahm and Ben Terry started at defensive end, but Matt LaGrone and Gabe Miller rotated in quite a bit. It looks like that will be the scenario unless one or two of the players separate themselves. I liked the play of LaGrone, in particular.
The receivers did get open consistently against OSU’s inexperienced secondary, but improvement will no doubt come in time.
